These all look like good categories except some of them might overlap with others.
Court cases for example seems like it could touch on almost all the other topics so perhaps not a topic unto itself, but instead each of the other topics might cite a case that is related.
Additionally, "current events" is very broad, and further, much of it might already be taken up by the marriage or religion categories. Perhaps this could be focused a bit on institutions specifically (military or the Boy Scouts for example). For the history category, make sure that it's not just a report on different events (which by the way should include the stonewall riot as well as the gay pride movement) but also shows a progression through time. What were the issues in the 1920's for example and did those change in the 50's or 70's)?
